APCO SEEKS COMMENTS ON PROPOSED CORE COMPETENCIES FOR MANAGERS AND DIRECTORS

May 11, 2009, Alexandria, Va. - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International released for comments a candidate American National Standard (ANS) that outlines the core competencies that define the basic functions, duties, responsibilities, knowledge, abilities and expertise attributable to individuals who manage public safety communications operations.

The purpose of the draft standard, Candidate APCO ANS 1.106.1-200x: Core Competencies for Public Safety Communications Manager/Director, is to provide guidance for public safety communications managers, directors and agencies, as well as to prepare the next generation of managers and directors currently working at various levels within public safety communications centers. The areas of core competencies identified include managing self and personal skills, providing direction, facilitating change, working with people, using resources and achieving results.

"APCO International respects the diverse nature of public safety communications, but recognizes the need for some level of standardization to support the professional development of these dedicated and highly skilled individuals," APCO International President Chris Fischer said.

There is a 45-day public review and comment period for this proposal that ends on June 22. The draft standard can be downloaded at http://www.apcointl.org/new/commcenter911/ansi-activity.php. For comments or questions, e-mail standards@apco911.org.
