APCO EVENTS HIGHLIGHT STAFFING AND RETENTION ISSUES

August 17, 2009, Las Vegas, Nev. - Two events at the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International's 75th Annual Conference and Exposition today will highlight one of the most important issues affecting public safety communications and present information to help public safety communications professionals address it.

APCO Project RETAINS will host a meet and greet at the APCO Pavilion in the Exhibit Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center at 12:00p.m. Seeking to assess the conditions under which communications centers are employed, APCO International established Project RETAINS, which resulted in a 2005 report and the Project RETAINS toolkit. This second Project RETAINS study, Staffing and Retention in Public Safety Communications Centers: A Follow-up Study, sought to extend APCO International's knowledge of communications center staffing issues not addressed. Members of the Project RETAINS Work Group will be available to answer questions about the study and report.

Training and Retentio - A New (and Cost Effective) Approach to an Old Problem will take place at 4:00p.m. at the Hilton in Pavilion 3. This presentation will identify opportunities for partnering and recruiting qualified candidates and ways to revaluate and enhance current hiring and training programs.

"Public safety communications professionals generally labor well out of the public eye, with limited support and an abundance of challenges," APCO International President Chris Fischer said. "Continual discussions and learning about the issues involved in their staffing and retention can greatly assist us in addressing these issues."
