CORE COMPETENCIES FOR MANAGERS AND DIRECTORS APPROVED BY ANSI
September 9, 2009, Alexandria, Va. - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International announced today the approval by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) of a standard that outlines the core competencies that define the basic functions, duties, responsibilities, knowledge, abilities and expertise attributable to individuals who manage public safety communications operations.
The purpose of the standard, APCO ANS 1.106.1-2009 - Core Competencies for Public Safety Communications Manager/Director, is to provide guidance for public safety communications managers, directors and agencies, as well as to prepare the next generation of managers and directors currently working at various levels within public safety communications centers. The areas of core competencies identified include managing self and personal skills, providing direction, facilitating change, working with people, using resources and achieving results.
"Responding to the needs of our members and dealing with the rapidly expanding and ever-changing service environment, this standard is a tool to further enhance our profession and continue the development of public safety communications managers and directors," APCO International President Richard Mirgon said. "As demonstrated by this effort, the continued collaboration of industry professionals increases the validity and value of our work."
