WOMEN'S CONFERENCE DISCUSSES LEADERSHIP IN MALE-DOMINATED INDUSTRY
March 16, 2010, Orlando, Fla. - Shortly after celebrating Women's History Month, women in the public safety communications industry will gather for a leadership conference. The Women in Public Safety Communications Leadership Conference, hosted by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International in Orlando, Fla. on April 21 and 22, includes tips for climbing the career ladder and women's work/life balance in the male-dominated public safety industry.
"The Women in Public Safety Communications Leadership Conference gives women a forum to discuss their unique career concerns and learn from other women who have faced similar challenges," APCO International Immediate Past President Chris Fischer said.
The conference includes a presentation on organizational communication by Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith (ret.), which will address gender-specific science and brain function and career survival for women in public safety.
"This course will inspire, motivate and help women learn to lead, win and excel in the often male-dominated and bureaucratic world of public safety by learning to really communicate," Smith said.

Growing a career in public safety communications creates different challenges for women than men. The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International launched the Women in Public Safety Communications Leadership Conference in May 2009 to meet the career needs of women in the industry. Women from PSAPs, law enforcement, fire and rescue, consolidated dispatch centers and other agencies attended the two-day event. Their rave reviews prompted APCO International to continue the event.
