APCO SEEKS COMMENTS ON UPDATE TO MISSING CHILD RESPONSE STANDARD
June 3, 2010, Alexandria, Va. - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International released for comments today a candidate American National Standard (ANS) to guide public safety telecommunicators in the processing of calls reporting missing, abducted, and/or sexually exploited children.
Candidate APCO ANS 1.101.2-201x: Standard for Public Safety Telecommunicators when Responding to Calls of Missing, Abducted, and Sexually Exploited Children is a reference designed specifically for public safety telecommunicators to present the missing, abducted and/or sexually exploited child-response process in a logical progression from initial call intake through ongoing incident and case support. This candidate ANS is a second version, including revisions and redesignation of the original APCO ANS 1.101.1-2007: Standard for Calltakers when Handling Calls Pertaining to Missing and Sexually Exploited Children.
"Reports of missing, abducted and sexually exploited children are among the most difficult, challenging and emotionally charged cases public safety communications and law enforcement agencies handle," APCO International President Richard Mirgon said. "Each stage of the case, therefore, from initial call through successful recovery, forms a critical component of a thorough child-protection response."
This candidate ANS was drafted by a joint steering committee of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) with members from APCO International, the National Academies of Emergency Dispatch (NAED), the National AMBER Alert Training and Technical Assistance program (U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention) and the National Emergency Number Association (NENA). The proposed ANS can be downloaded at http://www.apcointl.com/new/commcenter911/ansi-activity.php. Comments and questions must be sent by July 12 to standards@apcointl.org. About APCO International
