APCO APPLAUDS FCC FOR POSITIVE PUBLIC SAFETY ACTIONS

September 12, 2007, Washington, DC –The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International today applauded the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for its actions that will improve first responder capabilities. The FCC adopted yesterday APCO International's prior request that accuracy of caller location information provided with wireless 9-1-1 calls be measured at the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) level, which will dramatically impact the 9-1-1 calltakers ability to locate and send appropriate resources to callers using wireless phones (see the FCC's Press Release). The FCC also took important steps to expedite the completion of the 800 MHz rebanding process that is designed to prevent dangerous interference to public safety radio communications.

"APCO International is pleased that the FCC has taken this critically
important step to improve the location accuracy of our nation's wireless 9-1-1 calls," APCO International President Willis Carter said. "We are equally pleased that the FCC is taking aggressive action aimed at expediting the completion of the 800MHz frequency rebanding process.

These are two extremely important issues facing the public safety communications community. Yesterday, as we paused to remember, reflect and honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, we also celebrated a victory by making progress to improve upon our ability to protect the lives of our public."
