FCC APPOINTS APCO BOARD MEMBER TO CO-CHAIR COMMUNICATIONS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

October 13, 2009, Alexandria, Va. - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International today heralded the appointment of Immediate Past President Chris Fischer of Seattle, Wash. as co-chair of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Communications Security, Reliability and Interoperability Council (CSRIC) for a term of two years.

"After years of her tireless leadership at the helm of our association, nobody knows better than us how Chris's unselfish passion and dedication to public safety and the public at large will provide the FCC with a critical voice of unbiased, professional advice, input and feedback to help CSRIC and the FCC to meet and exceed its mission to our nation," APCO International President Richard Mirgon said.

In his letter offering appointment, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski wrote of Ms. Fischer, "Your expertise and leadership is critical to the successful completion of the CSRIC charter."

Fischer is currently the executive director of NORCOM, a new public safety communications agency consolidating two existing communications centers in Bellevue, Wash.

The FCC established CSRIC to provide recommendations on security, reliability and interoperability of communications systems, including public safety, telecommunications and media communications. Specifically, CSRIC will address broadband and other advanced technologies, as well as communications operability and restoration during disasters.

As an ANSI-certified standards development body, APCO International recently announced its plans to adopt PSST-endorsed 700 MHz Broadband Task Force recommendations as a basis for developing public safety broadband standards within the U.S. and North America.
